It's 4pm. You've got three hours of work left and roughly none of the will to do it. So you reach for the can that promises to fix exactly this.
For about ninety minutes, it does.
Then somewhere around 6pm you hit a wall harder than the one you were avoiding. You're foggier than before you drank it. And the obvious solution to that is another can.
That loop is not an accident. It's a fairly predictable consequence of what's in the drink.
Two ingredients doing two different jobs
Most energy drinks run on caffeine and sugar. They feel like one effect but they work on completely different timelines, which is what makes the whole thing feel so strange.
Sugar is the fast one. A typical 250ml energy drink carries around 27 grams — roughly seven teaspoons. Your blood sugar climbs quickly, your body releases insulin to bring it down, and because the climb was steep the correction tends to overshoot. You end up lower than where you started.
That dip is the crash. It usually lands somewhere between one and three hours after the drink, which is why it so often arrives right when you needed the focus most.
Caffeine is the slower one, and it doesn't create energy at all. That's the part most people have wrong.
Caffeine doesn't give you energy
Your brain produces a chemical called adenosine all day. It builds up steadily from the moment you wake, and as it accumulates you feel progressively more tired. It's essentially a timer.
Caffeine works by sitting in the receptors that adenosine would otherwise occupy. The adenosine is still there. Still building. You just can't feel it.
Which is fine, until the caffeine wears off. Then every bit of adenosine that accumulated while you were blocking it arrives at once, and you feel the tiredness you'd been holding at bay plus the tiredness you'd have felt anyway.
Caffeine borrows alertness from later in your day. It doesn't manufacture it.
The bit that compounds
Caffeine has a half-life of about five to six hours in most adults. That means a 4pm energy drink still has half its caffeine working in your system at around 10pm.
You might still fall asleep. But caffeine that late reliably reduces the amount of deep sleep you get, even when total hours look unchanged. You wake up less restored.
And a less restored morning makes an afternoon slump more likely, which makes the next can more appealing. That's how a one-off becomes a habit without anyone deciding it should.
Your tolerance also climbs. The dose that worked in January does noticeably less by June.
So what actually helps
Nothing here is an argument for never drinking caffeine. Coffee and chai are fine, and the research on moderate caffeine is largely reassuring. The problem is the specific combination — a large sugar load and a large caffeine dose, taken late in the day, on repeat.
A few things that genuinely move the needle:
Drink water first. Mild dehydration produces tiredness that feels almost identical to needing caffeine, and a lot of 4pm slumps are just thirst wearing a costume.
Eat something with fibre or protein rather than something sweet. It moves glucose into your blood more slowly, so there's less of a peak and correspondingly less of a dip.
Move for five minutes. Genuinely. A short walk does more for alertness at 4pm than most people expect, and it costs nothing.
And if you want something cold and fizzy — which is often the real craving, not caffeine at all — have something cold and fizzy that isn't seven teaspoons of sugar.
Where we land on it
Uncanned isn't an energy drink. There's no caffeine in it and we're not claiming it'll power you through a deadline.
What it is, is the thing you can reach for at 4pm that doesn't set up a crash at 6. No added sugar, so there's no spike to correct. Some prebiotic fibre, because it may as well do something while it's there.
The honest version of the pitch is small: most afternoon slumps aren't an energy problem. They're a sleep problem, a water problem, or a lunch problem. A drink can't fix any of those.
But it also doesn't have to make them worse.
